Use the Internet to Help Your Career and Job Search

Perhaps you've worked as a secretary or a nurse. Or in the kitchen. Perhaps you're coming back to a new world of paid work.

Let the Internet help get you where you want to be in the work-world.

Know "where you want to be".

Find out "where you want to be": What do you want to be doing - ideally?

You need a path to get from "where you are now" to "where you want to be". Find out how to make this path or Action Plan.

Remember: You don't need a computer at home to use the Internet.

You can access the Internet from many public libraries. Use Internet tools like the World Wide Web and e-mail there for little cost or free.

Use Internet tools to help you:

Get and use your own e-mail address.

Employers seeing your e-mail address might tend more to want to hire you. They might feel that you have enough computer skills to help them.

Find out how to get your own low-cost or free e-mail address. Learn how to use it. Use e-mail often. And tell others - like employers - about your e-mail address.

Print your e-mail address on your business cards or calling cards.

Find out how to get a low-cost set of business cards with your contact information. You can call these cards "business cards" or "calling cards". Include your name and e-mail address on your business cards. Give your business cards to employers - and to people who talk with employers.

Use the World Wide Web to research career options and job opportunities.

Find out how to use the World Wide Web to get information for your career.

Use "Web sites" describing occupations. Use "Web search engines" to research employers. Refine your skimming and reading skills.

Use e-mail - and network for career growth.

Find out how to network effectively. Give others appropriate information that helps them. In exchange, ask how to reach people who might be able to help you. Where appropriate, ask these people appropriately for their help.

Use e-mail to ask many people at the same time. E-mail to exchange career information and job tips. Use e-mail to research employers.
