Welcome to the English as an Additional Language Women's Network! Thank you for coming here!
"I am a woman and my first language is not English." If that sentence is true for you, please read - and expect to benefit from this Network!
You are a woman. English is not your first language. You might even live in a place where many people speak English.
You are very bright: you know more than one language! You work hard: learning English takes effort.
You may have done much in your education and career in one place. Then you may have moved to a new place. In the new place, you might be expected to use English daily. The English language situation there might seem hard. In the new place, you might be doing work that you don't like. Maybe you are paid very little. Some people might try to cheat you, because they think you don't understand the language. At home, you feel pressure to work hard, too. You might feel tired. You might be experiencing stress.
Firstly: Congratulations - and thank you! You deserve congratulations. Your efforts and achievements are great. They are great, even if other people do not understand the greatness of your efforts, achievements. You deserve thanks. The work you do is important and valuable. How important and valuable is your work? If nobody did the work you do, others might face difficulties. Your work is important and valuable, even if you are underpaid - or not paid at all.
Secondly: You can improve your situation. Take a moment now. Imagine, for a moment, that you can do whatever you want to do. Imagine, for a moment, that all your obstacles vanish. What would you like to be doing? What situation would you like for yourself? Knowing your goal is important. Knowing clearly where you want to be may help you arrive there.
How? Every day, you may see many people and situations. Suppose you remember your goal clearly, when you see these people and situations. Then, when you see someone, you might ask yourself a question. You ask, "Might this person help me with my goal?" Suppose you feel that the answer seems to be "Yes". If appropriate, you might then ask the person for help with your goal. Even if that person cannot help you directly, the person may refer you to someone else. That "someone else" might be able to help you.
Thirdly: Make contact with people who are truly willing to help you. Suppose you know a friend. Suppose she wants to know where to get good English-language training. Maybe you know the answer. You tell her where to get good English-language training. Suppose, tomorrow, you want to find a better job. Maybe your friend knows someone who can offer you that job. Your friend might help you. Suppose you know many of these friends. Then, together, all of you can share tips and information. Together, you can help each other. Some people might give a special name to this "sharing of help". They call it "networking".
Also: In many situations, a librarian might give you helpful information. Suppose you don't know who can help you. If appropriate, you might start by asking at the library. The librarian might not be able to help you directly. Instead, the librarian might suggest where you might find helpful people or resources. If possible, ask how to get a library card. You may be able to borrow books, magazines, videos, audio-cassettes. You may be able to learn and to use computers. You might use these resources to help you.
Join the English as an Additional Language Women's Network. You might be able to answer questions from other members in this Network. Others in this Network might be able to help you.
You can even practise English. How? You can write to one, or two, or many of them at the same time! They can write back to you.
You can ask them questions. You can try to answer their questions.
You can exchange other information, too.
Maybe you're looking for a good job. One of the others might know of a job opening that you want.
Are you thinking of taking a course at school? One of the others might have suggestions that might help you!
You might share information that helps others look for jobs or take courses, too.
The name, "English as an Additional Language Women's Network", is a long name! You can use the group's short name: EALWN.
The long name is "English as an Additional Language Women's Network". The letters, "EALWN", are the first letters of words in that long name. The "E" in "EALWN" is from "English as an". The "A" is from "Additional". The "L" is from "Language". The "W" is from "Women's". The "N" is from "Network". Together, those letters make up the short name: EALWN.
